Frequently Asked Questions

How can I schedule an appointment with a psychologist?

You can book an appointment directly without a referral. However, obtaining a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP or psychiatrist allows you to receive Medicare rebates for your sessions. To arrange a MHTP, inform your doctor’s office when booking, as this process typically requires a longer consultation.

What is a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP)?

A MHTP is a referral from your doctor that enables you to access Medicare rebates for psychological services. Initially, it covers six sessions. After these, you can return to your GP for a review to access up to four additional sessions, totalling 10 subsidized sessions per calendar year.

What can I expect during my first session with a psychologist?

It's natural to feel a bit nervous about your initial session. This meeting is designed to understand your reasons for seeking therapy, the challenges you're currently facing, and any past difficulties. Together, we'll develop a plan to support you. It's also an opportunity to ensure you feel comfortable with your psychologist and that they're well-suited to assist you.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required varies depending on individual needs and therapeutic goals. During your initial consultation, we will discuss a tailored treatment plan, including the estimated number of sessions to achieve your objectives.

Is the information I share confidential?

Yes, all information shared during sessions is kept confidential in accordance with professional ethical standards and legal requirements. Exceptions to confidentiality occur only in circumstances where there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, or as required by law.

How long do sessions last?

Sessions typically last 50 minutes. During our first meeting, we'll discuss the frequency of sessions and your therapeutic goals. The recommended number of sessions depends on various factors.

When are consultations available?

We operate Monday to Thursday during business hours.

How much does it cost to see a psychologist?

We provide bulk-billed services to clients with a GP referral and a valid mental health treatment plan, meaning there is no out of pocket expense to use our service. Fees of up to $220 apply for self-referrals without a mental health treatment plan.

How do I pay for my sessions?

Payments are processed via credit or debit card through our secure online system. You'll be required to enter your card details when completing the intake form prior to your initial appointment.

Do you offer telehealth services?

Yes, Mountain Connect Psychology operates entirely online, providing telehealth services via secure video conferencing platforms. This allows us to offer flexible and accessible psychological support to clients across Australia.

Can I use private health insurance for sessions?

If you have private health insurance with psychological services included in your extras cover, you may be eligible for rebates. We recommend contacting your insurer to confirm your specific entitlements and any applicable conditions.

Can different family members or friends see the same therapist?

We recommend that different family members and friends see separate therapists. This approach aligns with our professional Code of Ethics.

Can my psychologist offer support outside of scheduled sessions?

Psychologists are unable to provide support outside of scheduled sessions, as they are often engaged with other clients. It is most effective to address concerns during your dedicated session time.
